Hair Extension FAQs

How long do hair extensions last?

Our hair extension lifespan is determined by how they are cared for and maintained at home. With correct care and following our guidelines your hair extensions should usually last from 3 months to 1 year. There are lots of factors that can affect the lifespan of extensions. For example, the amount of times you wear your extensions and the products used on them are key factors which determine the durability.

Here at My Complete Routine we stock a Silicone Spritz which can be used on our hair extensions. This is a silicone coating which can increase the lifespan and usage frequency of the hair extensions, while also maintaining softness. We recommend the use of the silicone spritz as part of your extension care routine.

The spritz can also be used, when necessary, to revive your extensions.

Do I need to wash my extensions?

Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions By… Keeping Them Dry

Genuinely, one of the biggest myths about clip-in hair extensions is that you are recommended to wash, but this definitely isn’t true! In fact, getting your extensions wet can dry them out. MCR recommend avoiding this as much as possible. If you only use super lightweight products, you shouldn't get too much product build-up that you feel you need to wash out, and perfume sprayed at a distance is a great way to instantly make your extensions smell great.

Instead, it’s much safer to revive them with some Silicone Spritz which will help to replenish any moisture lost to heat styling and will totally refresh your set. You’ll only need to do this every few months but it’ll help to soften the hair, detangle the lengths and add loads of shine.

For more information, take a look at our full guide on How To Take Care Of Your MCR Extensions.

A kind note: we do not accept returns on extensions which have been washed or exposed to water. Deciding to wash your extensions is done at your own discretion, and for the sake of clarity, we recommend avoiding this as much as possible.

Can I use dry shampoo on my hair extensions?

Using dry shampoo on your extensions is something we strongly recommend against.

Dry shampoo is designed to dry out and reduce sebum in the hair. Our own natural growing hair has a regular supply of sebum, which helps keep our natural hair soft, but can also make hair greasy.

Hair extensions will not easily build-up with natural sebum, and so usually if your extensions feel greasy this will be because of product build-up. Dry shampoo isn't designed to remove product build-up and could instead cause considerable damage to your hair extensions.

Can I dye or tone the extensions I bought from you?

  • It's recommended to buy a shade closest to your own hair colour, but the extensions can be dyed up to two shades darker. The hair has already been through a chemical process, so bleaching or lightening the hair can affect the condition of the hair.
  • Always carry out a strand test before dyeing whole hair extensions. Dyeing hair extensions requires professional experience. Once hair has been dyed we cannot be held responsible for the dyeing process.

The results achieved when dyeing or toning hair extensions are hugely variable. Dyeing and toning your extensions is done entirely at your own discretion, and MCR does not accept returns on hair which has been dyed or toned. We do we accept responsibility for any unwanted results. This includes washing the hair with a purple shampoo, toning, semi-glossing or bleaching.

Why choose Human Hair Extensions?

Here are our top three reasons for choosing human hair extensions.

1.    Human hair extensions look beautifully natural because their natural texture blends perfectly with your own hair.

2.    When cared for correctly – in the same way as you should care for your own hair - human hair extensions are durable and long lasting.

3.    Because human hair extensions cope with the same styling and maintenance as your own hair, you can wear them any way you like. Curl, colour or straighten them to your heart’s desire, you can also wash and dye them.

You won’t find synthetic hair extensions at Cliphair. Unlike human hair extensions, synthetic extensions are unnaturally shiny; making them easy to spot. Synthetic extensions cannot be heat-styled or coloured. Even with the gentlest of care, synthetic hair extensions will quickly tangle and lose their original appearance.

What is Remy Hair..

Remy hair is the highest grade of human hair available in extensions. Remy hair refers to hair that has gone through minimal processing. The cuticles on the hair will be intact and face downwards, just the same as the hair on our heads. Because the cuticles follow the same direction, the hair is smooth and silky, looks shiny and remains tangle-free. Non-remy hair has hair cuticles lying in both directions. It tangles easily, has a duller appearance and feels less soft than remy hair.

Why Remy Hair?

Why spend your hard-earned money on anything but the best? You’ll look stunning and feel confident with long lasting, luxurious and realistic hair extensions. In comparison, cheaper hair extensions made with non-remy hair deteriorate quickly; you’ll feel less confident about your look and will need to buy new hair sooner.

We want you to be 100% satisfied with your extensions which is why we use only remy human hair in our extensions.

How often can I wear my extensions?

Recommended for occasional use. Some of our clients wear them only occasionally, e.g. for an event or special occasion, but others prefer to wear their extensions more frequently.

We recommend you do not use the hair extensions for extended amounts of time or wear them daily. Clip-in hair extensions cause no more damage than tying your hair into a tight ponytail. The application of clip-in extensions are the least damaging of all hair extension types, as there is no added glue, siclicone or heat, your hair and the extension are bonded together with single clips. However, it is still important to give your hair and head time without hair extensions.

It's important to note that if you do wear your extensions more frequently you'll need to take extra care in order to ensure they remain in the best possible condition, and ultimately extend the lifespan of your set for as long as possible. Take a look at our handy guide: how to take care of your MCR hair extensions.

Which type of clips are used on your hair extensions?

We only stock the best and most user friendly hair extensions. The clips used on our hair extensions are very discreet and comfortable to wear. They are medium sized gated clip, have a special rubber backing and are also pressure sensitive for those with weaker scalps.

All of this helps to keep the hair extensions in place once they are fitted. A great tip for ensuring your clips stay in place is to fit them as close to the head as possible, lightly backcomb your roots and apply some hair spray to give them something better to grip to.

Which length hair extensions should I choose?

It's important to get the length of your hair extensions just right. Our most popular and versatile length is 20 inches, for most people they come to bust level (depending on height and frame).

The best way of checking which length hair extension will be most suitable for you is to measure from the middle of your ear downwards.

This will show you an estimation where the hair extensions will come to and also give you an idea of how much longer the hair extensions will be compared to your own hair.

In previous years, style trends dictated that short hair with long hair extensions was an OK look. Although its still OK to wear long extensions in short hair, current style trends tend to favour hair which is more subtly extended.

As a rule of thumb, hair which is already longer than shoulder length can take the longer extensions and hair which is shoulder length and above tend to work best with extensions no longer than 20-22 inches.

Take a look at our blog post for more information on how to choose the perfect length of MCR extensions.

How do I revive my old hair extensions?

 Updated by Francesca Bosa

We understand that buying hair extensions is an investment and expensive so its one that you’ll really want to look after. With these tips you’ll be able to make your set last even longer. There's a few things we can suggest to keep the quality of the hair as long lasting as possible.

A gentle note: We usually advise to avoid getting the hair wet, but in certain circumstances such as extreme product build up in an old set, we would wash the hair to ensure we can get all product out and the hair back to its natural quality. We hope this helps.
Attempting to revive your set is done at your own discretion. We cannot accept responsibility for any unwanted results. Under no circumstances do we accept returns on hair which has been washed or exposed to water.

Step by step:

Step 1- fill a bowl with warm water and add a small quantity of shampoo (oil infused if possible). mix the shampoo into the water thoroughly.

Step 2- wash each weft one at a time, start by dipping it into the water, and using your fingers to rub the product out of the hair, rinse and repeat until you feel the weft is product free.

Step 3- empty out the bowl, and repeat the same method but this time with conditioner, ensuring you rinse out the product thoroughly

Step 4- lay each weft out on a dry towel

Step 5- use a small amount of the silicone spritz on each weft (we would suggest putting it onto your hand, and then massaging it into the hair, so you can control the amount you're putting into the hair. A little goes a long way!)

Step 6- let the hair air dry, this could take 1-2 days.

Step 7- once the hair is dry, spray with heat protectant, helping protect the hair in the long run.

Step 8- brush the hair with a tangle teaser, and straighten to seal in the silicone spritz.
